Local players continue to excel at baseball’s highest levels

July 13th, 2011 at 2:45 pm by Kevin Endejan

With Major League Baseball at the All-Star break, I thought it would be good to see how baseball players from Issaquah and Sammamish are doing at higher levels.

Here’s a look at how local products are doing with their respective organizations.

If I left anyone off the list, please shoot me a message and I will be glad to add them.

Blake Hawksworth
Blake Hawksworth is currently the only local player from Issaquah or Sammamish competing at the Major League level.

The 2001 Eastlake graduate has pitched in 30 innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He currently boasts a 2-2 record with a 3.00 ERA with 22 strikeouts, while allowing 10 earned runs, four home runs and nine walks.

So far, his highlight of the season came June 21 when he struck out the side against the Detroit Tigers in the top of the ninth inning.

Colin Curtis
A season after making his Major League debut with the New York Yankees, Issaquah graduate Colin Curtis stumbled on some bad luck in Spring Training when he dislocated his right shoulder.

The outfielder is expected to make a comeback next season.

Michael Lee
Michael Lee, a 2005 Skyline graduate, has struggled a bit since being called up to AA Portland Sea Dogs in the Boston Red Sox organization.

The 6-foot-7 right hander has a 1-4 record with a 5.47 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings.

Billy Marcoe
Billy Marcoe, a 2005 Eastside Catholic graduate, is playing catcher for the A High Desert Mavericks in the Seattle Mariners organization.

Marcoe is batting .200 in eight games with five hits and one RBI.

Julian Sampson
Skyline graduate Julian Sampson is currently pitching in the Independent Can-Am League for the Brockton Rox.

He is 3-2 with a 3.56 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings.

Sampson spent the previous four seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Matt Wickswat
Matt Wickswat is currently pitching in the Chicago White Sox organization for the A Salem-Winston Dash.

The 2004 Issaquah graduate has a 1-1 record with a 2.73 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings.

He is coming off his first victory, July 8, allowing just two hits and no runs in seven innings against Myrtle Beach.

Skyline players, Parker and Shannon, hoop it up | Video

July 13th, 2011 at 12:34 pm by Kevin Endejan

Here’s another cool basketball video put together by local videographer Cameron Crisp. The footage is from the Northwest Premier Showcase championship game held Monday between the Emerald City Basketball Association and the Eastside Basketball Club.

Skyline High School players Will Parker and Lucas Shannon, who are on opposite teams, are featured in the video. Parker is No. 4 on the white team and Shannon is No. 21 in blue.

A very cool compilation that’s worth a look.

Country’s top wakeboarders hit Lake Sammamish on Sunday

July 8th, 2011 at 10:06 am by Kevin Endejan

Issaquah and Sammamish residents will get an opportunity this Sunday to see some of the country’s top professional wakeboarders perform an exhibition on Lake Sammamish.

The riders are in town for the King of Wake pro tour in Monroe and Seattle Boat Company has organized for them to do a clinic and exhibition on Lake Sammamish.

Seattle Boat Co. is encouraging all Lake Sammamish residents and area boat owners to grab their boat, friends, and raft-up to enjoy the free show.

This is a rare opportunity to see the top riders perform amazing tricks up close and personal. The raft-up starts at 1 p.m. and will be at the Southwest end of Lake Sammamish (the nearest landmark is Camp Sambica).

A variety of wakeboarding talent will be on hand, including 2010 Tour Champion and King of Wake title holder, Phillip Soven.

Local archer records rare “Robin Hood” shot

July 5th, 2011 at 12:31 pm by Kevin Endejan

In relation to my recent feature on the Tiger Mountain Archers Club, here’s a pretty cool little tidbit of information on one of its members, Luke Greenwood.

According to his mother Shawna Palmer, the 11-year-old Bellevue resident recently shot his second career “Robin Hood” — when an arrow is shot down the spine of another. He shot his first this past winter.

Shawna passed along this photo evidence of Luke’s feat.

Sammamish soccer players compete for National Title with Sounders

July 1st, 2011 at 2:01 pm by Kevin Endejan

Three players from Sammamish on the Seattle Sounders U-15/16 academy team will compete in the National Championship finals July 10-16 in Milwaukee, Wisc.

Michael Gallagher, Jesse Klug and Sam Langston all earned the honor last week in the national playoffs in Dallas when the Sounders won their bracket and qualified to be one of eight teams to compete for the national title. Gallager and Klug participated in Texas, while Langston stayed home recovering from an illness.

The finals will be played at Marquette University, Marquette High School and Uihlein Soccer Park. They open up the tourney July 10 against the Dallas Texans.

The Sounders entered last week’s tournament as the third seed, but the No. 1 and No. 2 teams lost, so now are the top seed.
